why lion's mane

  • whole-spectrum 1:1

a hot-water extract of the whole fruiting body, gram for gram

  • 100% fruiting body

the mushroom itself, not the mycelium, not the grain it grows on

  • over 25% polysaccharides

    standardized, with every batch tested

  • Health Canada NPN 80122180

reviewed and issued by Health Canada; a source of fungal polysaccharides and antioxidants

  • made for recipes

coffee, tea, smoothies, soups and baking

in short

  • what it is

The whole lion's mane fruiting body as a hot-water-extracted powder, not concentrated. One teaspoon is 2.3 g. Nothing else in the pouch.

  • how it fits a day

Stir a teaspoon into coffee or tea, blend it into a smoothie, cook it into soup, bake with it. 108 servings.

  • where it comes from

Hericium erinaceus grows on hardwoods across North America, Europe and Asia and has a long place in East Asian cooking. The powder keeps it a kitchen ingredient.

why Purana

A pouch of Purana lion's mane powder beside two Purana bottles on a sunlit kitchen table

Every Purana label says the same few things, and each one was a decision. Here is what they mean.

  • the mushroom, not the mycelium

100% fruiting body, sourced to our own standards for potency and purity. The grain a mushroom is grown on never makes it into a Purana capsule.

  • concentrated, then named

our 8:1, 10:1 and 16:1 dual extracts name their compounds, and every input batch is tested for potency and purity.

  • a Health Canada NPN for every formula

each product was reviewed by Health Canada, formula, manufacturing and claims, and issued its own Natural Product Number, printed on the label and linked on this page.

  • Canadian, and plain about it

organic, non-GMO and vegan, made in a GMP-certified facility for a Vancouver company. Inputs are tested for heavy metals, pesticides and microbes. Nothing added that a label would have to explain.

how we compare

feature Purana lion's mane 1:1 powder a typical mushroom supplement
mushroom part 100% fruiting body often mycelium grown on grain, grain included
concentration 1:1 hot-water extract, the whole mushroom gram for gram often 1:1, or an unconcentrated powder
extraction hot water, which opens the cell walls often hot water only, or none
actives named and tested polysaccharides over 25% often no percentages and no named compounds
the capsule the extract alone, no capsule often fillers or flow agents
Health Canada NPN NPN 80122180 on the pouch look for an NPN on the label
supply per bottle 108 servings often 30 days

“Typical” describes practices that are common across mushroom supplements sold in North America. It is not a comparison with any named brand, and products vary. Hold any label against these rows.

what to expect

Mushroom extracts work through slow biology. The habit is the product. Here is the shape of the first two months.

  1. day 1

    start with food

One teaspoon in your morning coffee or tea. Nothing to feel yet, and that is normal: the first days are about the habit, not a sensation.

  2. week 2

    the habit holds

Same time, same meal. By now the teaspoon is part of the kettle routine rather than a decision. Keep going.

  3. day 30

    the research window opens

Most human trials of these mushrooms run four to twelve weeks of daily use. Notice how your days are going.

  4. day 60

    one bottle, your own evidence

A pouch is about a hundred days of daily teaspoons. Decide on that, not on a week. If it has earned its place, reorder or subscribe.

Effects are built, not switched on. This is guidance on consistency, not a promise of results.

the research

  • human trial

    twelve weeks, healthy older adults

Twelve weeks of lion's mane fruiting body improved cognitive test scores in healthy older adults compared with placebo.

  • human trial

a single dose, then 28 days, young adults

In healthy young adults, a single dose sped up a cognitive processing task, and 28 days of use trended toward lower self-reported stress.

  • analytical

    beta-glucan versus grain starch

Analytical methods separate true beta-glucan from the grain starch found in mycelium-on-grain products.

Research is reported as research, about the people or cells in each study. It describes the ingredient, not a promise about this product.

your ritual

how to take

One teaspoon (2.3 g) daily. The NPN allows one to three teaspoons a day.

when to take

Stir into your morning coffee or tea, blend into a smoothie, or cook it into soup. It bakes well too.

what's inside

Hericium erinaceus fruiting body, 2.3 g per teaspoon as a 1:1 hot-water extract, polysaccharides over 25%. Nothing else.

read the label What 1:1 means: a hot-water extract that is not concentrated. Opening the mushroom's tough cell walls with hot water makes the whole fruiting body more bioavailable, gram for gram. Short answers below.

short answers

Capsules or powder, which one is for me?

Same mushroom, same 1:1 hot-water extract. The powder is for people who like a kitchen ritual and a flexible serving; the capsules are for a fixed dose you can take anywhere.

What does 1:1 mean?

One kilogram of dried fruiting body makes one kilogram of extract. It is hot-water extracted, not concentrated; opening the cell walls with hot water makes the mushroom more bioavailable.

Fruiting body or mycelium?

Fruiting body only. The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. Mycelium is the root-like network it grows from, usually cultivated on grain, and mycelium products often contain that grain. There is no mycelium, grain or filler in a Purana capsule.

How much do I use?

One teaspoon (2.3 g) daily, in coffee, tea, a smoothie, soup or baking. The NPN allows one to three teaspoons a day.

Does it have a Health Canada NPN?

Yes. NPN 80122180, issued by Health Canada after a review of the formula, the manufacturing and the claims. The NPN wording is: a source of fungal polysaccharides with immunomodulating properties and as a source of antioxidants that help protect cells against free radicals.

Can I take it with medications?

Talk with your health care practitioner before starting any supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a health condition.

Natural health products with a Health Canada NPN are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Benefits of lion's mane

Why take lion's mane?

- to boost cognitive performance and neurological health
- to support a healthy cardiovascular system
- to strengthen the immune system

Lion's mane mushroom is a natural and caffeine-free way to support mental fatigue and brain fog, improving concentration and productivity. It helps with energy because it contains compounds that support cognitive function - called hericenones and erinacines. These compounds are metabolized by the body into nerve growth factor, a protein that plays an important role in brain health.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) helps to support your cognitive function as it strengthens connections between neurons (brain cells). It also supports the formation of new brain cells. Additionally, NGF helps to protect your brain from age-related damage.

Lion's mane mushroom is also a great way to support cardiovascular health. It contains compounds that help keep blood vessels healthy and functioning properly. These compounds are called polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are a type of carbohydrate that is known for their beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. They help to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation.

Lion's mane also supports the immune system. It contains compounds called beta-glucans, which are known for their immune-boosting properties. Beta-glucans have been shown to stimulate the immune system by activating certain white blood cells called macrophages, which help fight off infections. The immune-boosting properties of lion's mane mushroom may help you stay healthy during cold and flu season.
